Second Life
“I went to Second Life to escape an unkind world and there I found a perfect haven that nurtured my multi passionate nature.”
I can’t really talk about my multi passionate self without mentioning Second Life, a virtual world where anything can become a reality. I was about 24 when I found it, seeking an escape from a very unhealthy space.
What I found was absolutely mind blowing! Now I’d found online chat rooms a way to meet LBGTQ+ people since I was 17; because I grew up in very small towns, meeting other people like myself was impossible. So finding something that took that even further was only natural.
To begin with it was a way to be myself, meet people and go places. Pre 2020 this was an odd thing that very few understood; to go places without actually going anywhere, but SL has a diverse amount of places for a diverse scope of people. So many creatives have made such spectacular things within this world that one can never be bored! Experiencing this creativity was truly inspiring and it wasn’t long before I started falling down the creative rabbit hole.
I began with renting a small parcel of land and creating a fantasy home where I could relax by a creek, lay on a unicorn or chill in a forest. It was my space, something I sorely needed at the time, I could invite people over or simply hideout and block all access.
Slowly I was introduced to building by a friend, and while I absolutely loved the 3D building experience in SL it wasn’t until mesh was introduced that I truly started. If you’ve no idea about 3D computer software terminology, then this will sound all gobbledygook, hell most of it does to me too! Basically SL made it easier to build with external 3D software.
First building lead to my first SL business which was/is a little skybox (house in the sky) rental. I built the homes, and furnished them with different creators furniture until I got annoyed with the furniture not meeting my needs. This lead to my first furniture store in 2014 and eventually a second.
I went from fumbling around as a newbie in this big beautiful virtual world, being completely awestruck by the amazing creativity of others, and having no idea about 3D computer software, to having 3 business that earn me a small income in Real Life and actually being able to use Blender (a 3D computer software).
Blender in itself has been a huge journey, but by dipping my toes in very slowly and bit by bit, I have eventually gotten to a point that I’m now feeling like I have some idea of what I’m doing! My building process is probably completely different to how it ‘should’ be done, but that’s just me, and it works.
My Second Life business’s aren’t really something I’ve talked a lot about, as it’s often a complicated subject, but perhaps I’ll find the words to share bits and pieces in some posts as this website grows.
